An I.Y.L.T.(International Youth Leadership Trainer) is someone who is committed to five or more years of service on a given field in order to equip nationals with the Biblical and philosophical training necessary to develop a strong and growing local church youth ministry.
What are the requirements for an I.Y.L.T. before acceptance by YMI?
- First and foremost, they must have a heart for Christ and for students worldwide.
- They must have 18 credit hours of formal training in a local church youth ministry.
- Masters degree is required in some settings.
- They must have at least one year formal training in local church youth ministry.
- They must agree with YMI's statement of faith, guiding principles, and philosophy of ministry.
- Quality experience in local church youth ministry.
- A five year on the field committment (following all prefilled training and support raising)
What are the requirements for an I.Y.L.T. after personal interview with YMI?
- Approval by YMI President
- Approval and appointment by YMI Board
- Application and acceptance to one or several cross cultural training programs (to be completed before field placement)
An I.Y.L.T. is a faith-based position, and each individual must be willing to raise adequate funds for placement and ministry on a given field. Dollar amounts vary according to each specific field and the expenses that are incurred.
What are the responsibilities for an I.Y.L.T. during their time on the field?
- To train national youth workers on the field using both informal and formal training strategies.
- To focus on building one local church model of youth ministry on the field.
- To develop collateral training of other national youth workers in the vicinity of the home base model.
- To leave at least one national youth worker capable of training others and independently operating a dynamic youth ministry.
What are some commonly asked questions by those considering an I.Y.L.T. position?
- How will I benefit those nationals that I work with?
- You will help them to pursue their vision to create a healthy growing local church youth ministry.
- You can help to give them hope for the future of their church and the cause of Christ through their young people.
- Will I acquire the necessary education needed in order to teach the people what they need to know?
- You will receive all the education you need through training at International Teams, and through supplemental education that will be provided by YMI while you are in training at C. I.T. of United World Missions or International Teams for cross cutlure training.
- Personal experience in youth ministry will definitely be a helpful tool.
- There is different education requirements that will be addressed in the interview process.
- Some of our fields require a master degree and higher
- Language aquisition is required on the field.
- Is there additional education necessary?
- Some additional education in language development might be necessary, but most of this training will be available during the four month cross-cultural ministry process.
- What if I have a family?
- Trainers with families are certainly encouraged.
- We at YMI understand and respect the Lord?s command to protect and strengthen the family unit. That's why we believe that your family must be called just as clearly as you are.
- Family support for the ministry will be evaluated.
- Will my family and I be covered medically while we are on the field?
- As a part of your fund raising efforts you will raise enough support to obtain adequate medical insurance.
- What if I have outstanding debt?
- If they are manageable, we will allow you to pay them off as you spend time on the field. We reserve the right to determine what is manageable and what is not.
- What happens if I can't raise all my funds before my placement date?
- All trainers are required to have 100% raised and 85% of the funds coming in before being released to the field.
- We always reserve the right to push a start date back if essential funds have not accumulated in an I.Y.L.T.?s account.
- What happens after my 5 year committment?
- YMI is open to a career missionary committment.
- You will have gained valuable experience both in the area of youth ministry and in missions.
- Most importantly, you will have been a key player in the development of a ministry that, if properly and completely implemented, will continue on through time into eternity. You will have affected the lives of teens and adults for years to come!
